Flock Card ID Design

The Flock Card project started as an opportunity to reimagine a design that University of Oregon students, staff, and community members carry daily. I wanted to create something that felt timeless and meaningful: a card that went beyond function and reflected the community and spirit of being a Duck. My concept was selected as the winning design in the university’s competition and later refined by UO’s Brand Strategy team, who kept the essence of my vision while preparing it for official rollout in 2025.

From Idea to ID

  • When approaching the design, I thought about what students actually connect with. Instead of using a map or overly literal icons, I focused on motion, energy, and community. My design leaned into the idea of individuality merging into a larger whole, much like Ducks flying together. This allowed the card to feel fresh while still grounded in UO’s identity.

  • After my design was selected, the UO Brand Strategy team worked on refinements to make sure it fit within official brand standards. I then had a meeting with the brand team to learn that I had won and to see the adjustments they made to fit within the brand standards. Seeing how they adjusted typography and layout while still keeping the visual direction I had established taught me how professional teams adapt concepts for consistency and scale.

  • This project reminded me that design has both personal and community impact. Something as small as an ID card becomes part of a student’s daily life. It also reinforced the importance of creating designs that can be built on and refined by others, a skill that translates directly into professional creative work.

Seeing my concept announced as the official new Flock Card was an incredible moment. The university’s brand team refined details for consistency, but the heart of my design, the motion and energy I wanted to capture, carried through. Knowing this card will soon be part of every student’s daily life is one of the most impactful outcomes of my design journey so far.
